Gov.verify - a new way to secure your identity?
The explosion of comparatively cheap broadband and a plethora of internet enabled devices has meant that the world is now more connected than ever before. Public and private bodies are now exploiting the convenience of the internet to make previously slow or laborious services quicker, more convenient and always available.
The government's new service - gov.verify - aims to provide a secure and simple means to not only access a host of government services, but to actually confirm your identity using your existing data by cross-checking with certified partner companies. This unique approach is designed to revolutionise online personal security and reduce identity fraud.
Although the service has currently only existed in beta form, it will go 'live' in the final week of May 2016 with the promise to speed up access to personal records such as checking your Income Tax for the current year or filing your Self Assessment tax return with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), getting a State Pension statement or applying for Universal Credit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Viewing or sharing your driving licence information with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or even claiming for redundancy and monies owed, with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) - all services that at one time relied on irksome forms and a long wait for the post, or being stuck on hold when trying to get through to someone on the phone.
With respected and established companies like Barclays, CitizenSafe, Digidentity, Experian, and Royal Mail already on-board to provide certification the new service looks set to be a major step forward for digital Britain.
